Qantara is the square serif Egyptian you always wanted: clear, sturdy, warm, legible, economical and customisable.

Designer Jacques Le Bailly devised his ideal idea of a slab-serif over a long period of time, inspired by the Clarendon style and designs like Týfa Antikva with their low stroke contrast and bracketed serifs but also looking at the square-serif Egyptian tradition. By reducing the contrast as much as possible he was able to omit some of the vertical serifs (e.g. in c and s) that tend to disrupt readability and rhythm, especially in smaller sizes. The result is an inviting impression oscillating between impartial and curious.

Letterforms, numerals and proportions were designed for optimal legibility. While the lowercase characters are compact, the capitals and figures are broad and clear. Ascenders are higher than uppercase letters for better distinction. Single-story and more expressive alternates for lowercase a, c, f, g, j, r, s, t and y let you customise the flavour of the design to your liking and the intended impression. Versions with vertical serifs are also provided for E, F, G, J and the numerals 2 and 3 via stylistic sets.

The regular weight of Qantara is relatively dark and thus well suited for low-quality output techniques or standard resolution screens. Four more weights from extra light to bold plus oblique-style italics provide you with a full range of options for branding, signage, or any kind of information design.
